After this raid, several other raids also took place in Holland that created huge scale of destructions and calamities. Holland with its other provinces and regions collapsed as they failed to resist the attacks.
Things were made under control after a long period of time, when in 1555 King Charles offered Netherlands or Holland to his son Phillip II. Another important historical milestone developed at this phase. Phillip II came out to be a tyrannical ruler and started ruling in an oppressive manner. To get rid of such uneven circumstances the Dutch called upon the war of independence. At this time Holland was under the control of the Spain, the Protestant church movement also developed in Holland and rose against the Spanish rule which was still under the charge of King Charles the father of Phillip. To stop such protests King Charles sent Spanish soldiers and ordered total massacre of the people in Holland. To counter such Spanish invasion different small principalities joined together and formed unitary Netherlands or Holland. The alliance from the side of the Netherlands faced difficulties in resisting the Spanish army but their zeal of independence and might kept them motivated and courageous. Ultimately in the year 1648 Spanish proclaimed the sovereignty and declared independence to Holland. This event took place in the 17th century, however, in the modern period of 19th century Netherlands or Holland faced sever crisis during the world-wars. In the 17th century the superior nature of England overshadowed the essence of Holland. Nevertheless in the mid of the 20th century after the end of the world-wars, Holland stabilized its economy and social structures.
