As the capital city of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is placed in the southern part of the state North Holland. The Amsterdam city was established in the late 12th century. Formerly the Amsterdam city was known as a small fishing village situated at the opening of the Amstel river. The meaning of the name Amsterdam is Amstel dam. Amsterdam possesses a rich and glorified history in its own. In the 17th century, this historical place built along with its concentric canals in the time of the Dutch Golden Age. According to the census of 1st January, 2006 the city of Amsterdam has a population of 743,027 inhabitants. In terms of population Amsterdam is the largest city in the Netherlands.

The river Amstel runs into the city from the southern part. The dam in the Amstel was situated under the present Bijenkorf departmental shop. Warmoesstraat is the oldest street in the Amsterdam. Waterland is also a secured rural place of open fields and small villages. All major tourist destinations and hotels of Amsterdam are placed inside this place or just in vicinity of it.
